How to write a sales assistant CV summary
A good summary for a retail sales assistant shows what you sell, how well you sell it and what extra responsibility you take. In three or four lines, cover:
- Type of retail: fashion, beauty, electronics, furniture, sports, DIY, luxury or department store. Product knowledge matters, especially in specialist and luxury stores.
- Sales results: personal or team targets, ATV, UPT, conversion or add-on sales such as warranties, credit or loyalty cards.
- Extra responsibility: key holder, stockroom lead, visual merchandising, training new starters.
- Next step: another sales role, a specialist area or a supervisor post.
Replace generic phrases such as excellent people skills with something measured: regularly the top seller on the team for accessories.
Experience: use your store's numbers
Most retailers track performance closely, so you probably have more numbers than you think. Ask your manager or check shift reports for figures like these:
- Sales against target: personal, team or department targets as a percentage.
- ATV and UPT: how much and how many items customers bought per transaction, compared with the store average.
- Conversion: the share of visitors who bought, if your store counts footfall.
- Add-ons: warranties, insurance, finance, store cards, loyalty sign-ups or beauty services booked.
- Customer feedback: mystery shopper scores, survey results or customers who named you in reviews.
- Operations: deliveries processed, stock accuracy, replenishment, click-and-collect speed.
Write each bullet as action plus result: Raised UPT on my shifts from 1.8 to 2.3 by suggesting matching accessories. One or two good figures per job are enough.
Stock, merchandising and shop-floor responsibilities
Much of a sales assistant's day happens away from the till, and managers want people who keep the floor sales-ready. Include the operational work you do:
- Deliveries and stock: processing deliveries, replenishment, stock counts, handheld or RFID scanners, managing the stockroom.
- Visual merchandising: floor sets, window displays, planograms and seasonal launches, ideally with a result.
- Online orders: click-and-collect, ship-from-store, online returns.
- Security and safety: key-holding, opening and closing, loss prevention, cash office.
These responsibilities show you are ready for supervisor or assistant manager roles, so give them their own bullets instead of hiding them in a list of duties.
Skills for a retail sales CV
List selling skills you can demonstrate, such as approaching customers on the floor, asking questions to understand what they need, suggesting complete outfits or bundles, and closing a sale without pressure. Add product knowledge where it matters: fabrics and fit in fashion, skin types in beauty, specifications in electronics.
Technical skills include EPOS systems, refunds and exchanges, stock systems and scanners, and any online ordering tools. For soft skills, pick those that make a difference on a busy Saturday: staying energetic over a long shift, working as a team in a crowded store, and dealing calmly with returns and complaints.
Length, availability and seasonal roles
Keep your CV to one page unless you have supervisory experience. Retailers recruit heavily for peak seasons and sales periods, so add a line about your availability and flexibility, such as weekends, late nights or extra hours before Christmas.
Temporary and seasonal jobs are worth listing, especially if you were kept on afterwards. Before applying, look at the brand's style and products and tailor your summary to them: a luxury boutique wants product knowledge and clienteling, while a high-volume store wants speed, teamwork and stock handling.
