State your qualification status precisely
Your professional qualification often decides which roles you are shortlisted for, so make it impossible to miss. Put it after your name or in the first line of your summary, and spell out exactly where you are:
- Qualified: body and year, e.g. ACCA member since 2022, CIMA (ACMA, CGMA), or ACA, ICAEW or Chartered Accountants Ireland.
- Part-qualified: the number of exams passed and what is left, e.g. ACCA, 9 of 13 exams passed, Strategic Professional in progress or CIMA Management level complete. Add the date of your next sitting if it is soon.
- Technician level: AAT Level 3 or 4, which suits accounts assistant and junior accountant posts.
- National qualifications: name the local title, such as statutory auditor or tax adviser, alongside an English description so an international recruiter understands it.
How to write an accountant CV summary
Cover four points in three or four sentences: your qualification, the type of accounting you do (financial, management, audit, tax, or a shared service process such as record to report or purchase to pay), the scope you handle, and the role you want next. Scope is what separates accountants at the same grade: the number of entities, countries, the accounting standards (IFRS, FRS 102, local GAAP) and whether you prepare statutory accounts, group reporting packs or management accounts.
Finish with one concrete achievement, such as a faster close, a clean audit or a system you implemented. Leave out lines like detail-oriented team player. Your reconciliations and audit results already prove that.
What to put in your experience section
Start each role with a line of context: industry, size of the business or the entities you cover, and what you own in the close. Then use bullets that show results, not a list of routine tasks. Strong bullets usually cover:
- Close and reporting: the working day you deliver on, how you improved it, and which reports you own (management accounts, group packs, board reporting).
- Balance sheet integrity: how many reconciliations you prepare or review, and how you reduced old reconciling items or suspense balances.
- Audit: preparing PBC lists, being the main contact for auditors, and the outcome, such as no adjustments or fewer management letter points.
- Control and compliance: VAT returns, intercompany matching, SOX or internal control testing, and transfer pricing recharges.
- Systems and automation: ERP migrations, new reconciliation tools, or Excel and Power BI work that cut manual effort.
If you are moving from audit to industry, translate your work for the hiring manager. Instead of a list of clients, describe the areas you tested, the size and sectors of the audits you ran, and any team you supervised as an audit senior.
Show your systems and Excel skills specifically
Finance teams hire people who can work in their systems from the first close, so name them. List your ERP and the modules you know, such as SAP S/4HANA FI/CO, Oracle Fusion, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance, NetSuite, or Sage and Xero for smaller businesses. Add consolidation and close tools like OneStream, Oracle FCCS or BlackLine, and reporting tools such as Power BI.
Describe Excel with features, not adjectives. Power Query, pivot tables, XLOOKUP and building three-statement models tells a finance manager far more than advanced Excel.
Length, format and confidentiality
Two pages suits most accountants. Trainees and graduates can fit onto one. Use reverse chronological order, consistent date formats and a plain layout, since finance roles are often screened through applicant tracking systems that look for terms like month-end close, IFRS, reconciliations and the name of the ERP.
Check every figure. A typo in a number looks careless on an accountant's CV. Be careful with confidential information as well: do not publish an employer's unreleased results or a client's figures. Use ranges or relative sizes, such as entities with combined revenue of around EUR 400m, or describe the improvement in percentages.
