How to write a project manager CV summary
Your summary should show the size and type of projects you deliver in three or four sentences. Include:
- Domain: IT and business systems, construction, engineering, marketing, change and transformation, product, events or public sector.
- Scale: typical budgets, team sizes, number of sites or users, project length.
- Method and certifications: PRINCE2, PMP, Agile or Scrum, or a hybrid approach, and the governance you are used to.
- Stakeholder level: who you report to and work with, such as directors, clients or boards.
End with the role you want next. Avoid lines like results-driven project manager with excellent communication skills; they could describe anyone. A budget, a delivery and an outcome say much more.
Describe projects, not responsibilities
The experience section should read as a list of delivered projects. For each important project, give the reader enough to judge its size and your role:
- What and why: the project in one phrase and its business purpose.
- Scale: budget, team, vendors, sites, users or customers affected.
- Delivery: on time, on budget, scope kept under control; be honest about overruns and how you managed them.
- Outcome: what changed afterwards, such as cost savings, faster processing, fewer errors, revenue or compliance.
- Your contribution: the planning, risk, vendor, cutover or recovery decisions you made.
A good bullet looks like this: Delivered a €1.2m CRM migration for 300 sales users in 9 months, on budget, cutting quote turnaround from three days to one. If you have run many small projects, group them by type and give totals instead.
Methods, tools and certifications
Recruiters often search by certification, so list the ones you hold with the awarding body and year:
- Methods: PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner, PMP or CAPM from PMI, IPMA levels, APM qualifications in the UK.
- Agile: Professional Scrum Master, Certified ScrumMaster, SAFe or Agile project management certificates.
- Domain qualifications: ITIL for IT service projects, Lean Six Sigma for process improvement, or construction and engineering qualifications.
In your skills section, name the tools you plan and report with: MS Project, Smartsheet, Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, Power BI or Primavera P6. Mention governance practices too, such as RAID logs, stage gates, change control and earned value, because they show how you keep projects under control.
Skills and stakeholder management
Hard skills for a project manager include planning, scheduling, budgeting, risk management, vendor and contract management, requirements gathering and testing or cutover planning. Be specific about the level of control you had over money: did you own the budget, forecast it or only report on it?
For soft skills, show the situations you handle: chairing steering committees, negotiating scope changes with clients, aligning teams across countries, or bringing a late project back on track. One concrete example in your experience section is worth more than five adjectives in a skills list.
Tailoring, length and moving between industries
Two pages suit most project managers; programme and portfolio managers can go to three if the extra page covers relevant programmes. Put your most relevant projects first and shorten older roles.
Project management skills transfer between industries, but hiring managers still look for domain knowledge. If you are moving sector, for example from construction to IT, lead with transferable evidence (budgets, contractors, safety, stakeholder management) and show any learning in the new field. Mirror the job advert's language on methods and tools where it is honest; if it asks for Agile experience, make sure your Agile projects are visible on the first page.
